Children, ages 3 - 12, accompanied by an adult, are invited to attend out Valentine's program. We'll be showing a free, 30-minute animated children's movie. Refreshments will be served and each child will receive a special Valentine's bookmark! No sign-up required.

It's that time of year again! Brown Library's annual book sale is right around the corner. It will be hosted, as usual, at the Washington Civic Center, right down the road from the library. Here are the upcoming dates:

Thursday, January 19th, 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm

This day is reserved for memebers of the Friends of the Brown Library only!

Friday, January 20th through Saturday, January 21st, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

These days are open to the public.

Sunday, January 23rd, 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm

The last haul - the Books-By-The-Bag day! This is open to the public as well.

We hope to see you there, and may you find many gems amongst the books to take home with you!

Brown Library Honors Walt Disney

December Young Adult Display:

Walt Disney & Fairy Tales

In honor of the anniversary of Walt Disney's birthday, Brown Library has put together a small display on one of his largest inspirations: fairy tales. Reworking classic stories was a talent Disney mastered during his career.

The display features a scene from all of Disney's major fairy tale movies, from "The Little Mermaid" to "The Princess and the Frog". Each also has the origin of the story, be it the collected works of the Brothers Grimm, to steeped in the history of ancient Greece.

The books featured are both the classics themselves, and modern retellings. Once of young adult fiction's most popular genres is the fairy tale, but told in a new way, and often times with a modern setting. The available titles range from picture books, through adult titles, so any and all are sure to find a cozy tale to curl up with this December!

Thanks to the Pamlico River Quilters' Guild, the Library is looking rather festive. Every year, the Guild decorates a beautiful Christmas tree for us, as well as a display in the entryway.

Do you have stacks of old books scattered around your home? Are your bookshelves sagging under the weight of all those unread novels you're never going to get to? Brown Library has a solution for you!

Hosted by the Friends of the Brown Library organization, the annual winter book sale is probably one of the biggest, and most anticipated events we have all year long. And now is the time to start bringing in your books to donate! Donations that go to the sale help fund the library, making it a better resource for the community. Not to mention, all donations are tax deductable!

This year, children's books are definitely needed for the sale - they get snapped up quick, and there just never seems to be enough to go around. If you're a teacher or a parent, clean off those shelves and bring them in!

FOBL Event: How to Write a Book

The Friends of the Brown Library organization will be hosting a special program, How to Write a Book, on Thursday evening, December 1st, at the Washington Civic Center. Anyone and everyone is invited to attend. The event is free for all FOBL members, and the non-member charge is only $5.00. Invited writers on the panel will be reading from their works, and discussing why they were inspired to write, how they used history and their own family material to tell a story, how they found a publisher, and the process of editing your work. Authors attending include: William Mann, Rachel Mills, Jayne Davis Wall, Jerrie Oughton and Jerry Leath Mills.

If you are an aspiring local author, this is an event you definitely don't want to miss!

We invite our teenage patrons (and their parents too!) to join us for a spooky movie on Friday, October 28. Starring Amanda Seyfriend, this is a unique take on the famous "Little Red Riding Hood" fable.

"Valerie (Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Irons). Brown Library Receives Gift from Brownstone Book Fund

We are happy to announce that Brown Library has just received a gift of 100 new children's books, ranging from pre-kindergarten through early readers. These books are a donation from the Brownstone Book Fund, a private foundation in New York City, interested in fostering early reading, a love of books and encouraging parents and children to read together.

Each donated book has a golden Brownstone seal on the cover. We are absolutely honored to receive such a wonderful donation, and we hope you will enjoy the new additions to the collection.

This month, Brown Library is celebrating Teen Read Week with a special display in our Young Adult area, complete with themed books for check-out, and free bookmarks and pencils to snag!

"Teen Read Week is an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Teen Read Week started in 1998. This year's theme is Picture It @ your library®, which encourages teens to read graphic novels and other illustrated materials, seek out creative books, or imagine the world through literature, just for the fun of it. Libraries across the world celebrate Teen Read Week with a variety of special events and programs aimed at encouraging teens to read for pleasure and to visit their libraries for free reading materials." The Friends of the Brown Library is a wonderful volunteer organiztion that supports programs, purchasing, and operations at our library. They have provided so many things for us, from fun-filled children's computers, to music, to even our ability to show movies for free to our patrons.

Every year during the last week of September, "Banned Book Week" rolls around. This is the time of year to celebrate your right to read, and to stand up for our First Amendment rights of freedom of speech.

For years, books have been challenged and even banned from public facilities, such as schools and libraries. The American Library Association works year-round to prevent the banning of books.

During this week, challenge yourself to pick up a classic challenged book from our shelves, and celebrate your right to read whatever you want.

Dianne Hackworth will come down from the mountains of Tennessee to share some of her favorite stories with us in Washington. Dianne came by storytelling naturally, having grown up in a family of storytellers. But she didn't stop there. She went on to receive a Master's degree in storytelling from East Tennessee State Univeristy. She is a co-founder and past president of the North Carolina Storytelling Guild, a member of the National Storytelling Network, and the creator of numerous storytelling events in both Tennessee and North Carolina. Dianne will bring to life traditional Appalachian folktales, ballads, and storied from around the world.

It's the end of an era. This month for our display, we've chosen to pay a small commemoration to the world of Harry Potter. On July 15th, the final film in the Harry Potter saga will be released, ending an adventure that's been topping the sales charts since 1997.

Stop by our display and check out our magical timeline, tracking the progress of all the book and film releases. Also, for those devout Potter fans, after the final film you may experience something that we like to call "Post-Potter Depression". We have a couple of solutions avaible for you, including some fantastic series that, while they may not replace Harry, can maybe help fill the gap.

In preperation for the final film, we will be showing the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1" on Friday, July 15th, at 4 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room. All ages are welcome! See our previous posts for more details on the movie!

We are happy to welcome back Ron Jones, of Durham, for a fun program of stories and songs. Ron grew up on a dairy farm in central North Carolina, and worked for many years as a library adminstrator and consultant. Ron organized the Wake County Storytelling Festival, one of the oldest such events in our state. From traditional folktales to personal stories to funny songs on the guitar, Ron will take us on a high energy ride that is sure to delight listeners of all ages. This performance will provide the opportunity to enjoy English/Spanish bilingual stories!

The Goose Creek Park rangers are once again helping us out this summer with the Summer Reading Program. On Friday, July 8th, at 11 a.m., Brown Library is pleased to host some fun outdoor activities. This event will take place in the grassy area underneath the trees in the parking lot, and in the front yard of the library. Kids will be divided up into groups, ages 3 - 7, and ages 8 - 12.

Parents, please be sure to bring a lawn chair or a blanket for you comfort during the outdoor activities. Also, please be advised that in case of rain, outdoor activities will be cancelled.

The first installment of the "Children's Summer Movies" for the Summer Reading Program begins this Wednesday! To kick-off, we're showing the 1971 "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"!

"The world is astounded when Willy Wonka, for years a recluse in his factory, announces that five lucky people will be given a tour of the factory, shown all the secrets of his amazing candy, and one will win a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate. Yo ho ho! Brown Library's own children's librarian, Terry Rollins, will don his pirate garb to become a swashbuckling cutthroat as we set sail for high seas adventure in the Civic Center. Terry will share some of his favorite pirate legends, including Blackbeard, and provide children with lots of piratical information and trivia. Children will learn their own special pirate name, and create their own pirate flag. This event will serve as our big craft program for the summer, so don't miss it! Arr!

Teen Summer Reading Program: Howl's Moving Castle

Even though this is the first event for our Teen Summer Reading Program, all ages are invited to come and enjoy the film! Our film choice relates to the display currently up in the Young Adult section of the library: Steampunk.While not 100% Steampunk, this film, created by the revered Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli of Japan, is based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones, and definitely has a few nods of the head to Steampunk culture.

"Young Sophie Hatter is cursed by the Witch of the Waste, and turns into an old hag. Ashamed of how she looks, she flees into the hills where a moving castle roams the hills. It is said to belong to the young and handsome wizard Howl, who has a bad reputation. Within the castle, Sophie befriends the fire demon Calcifer, who promises to help her become young again. One catch: she must help Calcifer to be free of Howl, and Calcifer cannot tell her how. However, Sophie agrees to stay and try to find out about the contract through other ways. Still, Howl can see that Sophie is under a spell like Calcifer can, and he falls in love with her for who she is and not for what she looks like. We kick-off our 2011 Summer Reading Program with a visit from storyteller Priscilla Best of Goldsboro. Priscilla is a retired school teacher and librarian who now travels the land sharing stories from the heart. She is a member of the North Carolina Storytelling Guild and a regional representative to that organization's board of directors. In 2004, she traveled to South Africa, sharing stories, as part of the USA delegation from the National Storytelling Network.

Teen Summer Reading Program: Reading for Prizes

This summer, Brown Library is offering teens ages 13 - 18 the opportunity to read for prizes in our very first Teen Summer Reading Program. If you were planning on reading this summer anyway, why not get rewarded for it?

We're keeping it simple this year, and there's no sign up to participate. Here are the guidelines:

1.) You must be 13 - 18 years of age to participate. All books read must be checked out from our Young Adult literature section.

2.) When you’ve read the book, bring it back and fill out the form located at the front checkout desk. Write down the title and author; give the book a quick rating based on how much you enjoyed it; and leave us your name, phone number, and email. Make sure we have a way to contact you if you win!

3.) Fold it up, and drop it in the box at the front desk!

4.) Join us on Friday, August 5th, at 4 p.m. upstairs for the finale event! We’ll be drawing names for prizes, and enjoying some tasty treats.

5.) Each book you read is an entry, so Read, Read, Read!

Be sure to pick up a brochure at either the front desk or the Young Adult section!

Teen Summer Reading Program 2011 Schedule

This year, we're trying something a little new. For the first time, Brown Library is offering a small Summer Reading Program, just for our teenage patrons, ages 13 - 18. Since this is the first year, we're keeping things simple, and making this easy on everyone. There is no official sign up this year, so anyone and everyone can participate this year. Look for a future post with more details about how you can read for prizes this summer!

Our teen program will only be featuring three events this summer, one in each month:

June 24, 2011: Steampunk film, "Howl's Moving Castle", @ 4 p.m., upstairs

July 15, 2011: film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1", @ 4 p.m. upstairs

August 5, 2011: Finale event! Prize drawing and snacks @ 4 p.m. upstairs

The library will also be teaming up with the bookstore downtown, I Can't Believe It's a Bookstore, in July for some magical Harry Potter fun. Keep an eye out for details!

June Young Adult Display: Steampunk Edition

We've added a new feature to our Young Adult section at the library: a display area! Each month we'll be featuring a new theme, relating to all things literary. For our first month, we've started with something a little outside the box: Steampunk.

Steampunk started as a genre of fiction, mixing the Victorian era with steam-based and futuristic technology. Since it's early days, it's evolved into so much more. You can find the Steampunk influence in movies, video games, and even music.

Check out our display to learn more about this growing phenomenon, and to check out the books we have available for checkout featuring Steampunk.

Also, the display correlates with our new Teen Summer Reading Program. We'll be showing the Steampunk-influenced anime film "Howl's Moving Castle" on June 24th, 2011, at 4 p.m. in our upstairs meeting room. So, if you're interested in Steampunk, or the reading program, stop by to enjoy a fantastic movie, and snacks - all ages are welcome! With the arrival of summer comes the arrival of the most exciting time at Brown Library, the Summer Reading Program! This year's theme is "One World, Many Stories", so we'll be showing movies about all different places in the world, and featuring some wonderful storytellers. Summer Reading Program Sign Up!

Make sure to come by on June 1st to sign up for the Summer Reading Program! There is a limit on the amount of children that can participate, so make sure you come in as soon as possible before they're all filled up! Also, parents, you will have to come by the library to sign up. There will be no over-the-phone sign ups! Otherwise, you wouldn't get a reading log, and have nothing to record your books on! And be sure to pick up a brochure at the front desk - it contains all the important information of collecting prizes and a schedule of events for the Summer Reading Program.

Brown Library will be closed for construction on Monday, May 9th, and Tuesday, May 10th, 2011.

The library will reopen on Wednesday, May 11th, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. and resume our normal schedule.

No Public Internet Access

Additionally, Brown Library will not have public internet access available from May 7th through May 10th, 2011, due to the construction.

The computers should be back up and running on Wednesday, when the library reopens.

Brown Library Celebrates Poetry Month!

All throughout the month of April, Brown Library will be celebrating National Poetry Month. We are taking the one-day event of "Poem in Your Pocket Day", and turning it into a month-long fun event. Scattered around the library in different locations are cans with a variety of poems tucked in them. These poems are free to take, and you can keep them for yourself, or pass them on the friends and family to spread the joy of poetry!

A "Green" Christmas @ Brown Library

Thanks to the Montessori Preschool of Washington, the children's area of Brown Library is celebrating a very "green" holiday season. The youngsters have created a Christmas tree, complete with decorations, from recycled products!

The Christmas tree itself is an impressive stack of painted 2-liter soda and water bottles. Recycled CDs, painted and decorated with feathers, become cheery cardinals sitting on its branches. A bright star, a reindeer, festive snowmen, and holiday wall decorations complete the wintery scene.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Premiere Party!

Back in November, Brown Library hosted our very own "Harry Potter Month" to celebrate the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1". We had month-long contests, showed all the Harry Potter movies (1 - 6 at least!), and ended it with a bang with our very own premiere party. We'd like to thank all of you who showed up for the party, and a very special thank you to those who joined us for the movies each and every time! You guys made it all worth it!

We are very sad to announce that "Harry Potter Month" is finally drawing to a close. We'd like to thank the participants that have entered the contests so far, and our "regulars" at all the movies we've shown. But there is still one more fun event to participate in before it's all over!

Harry Potter Month Contests!

It's officially one month until the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1", and we're rolling out the contests! Be sure to pick up a detailed sheet from the front desk if you're interested in participating. You will have until closing on November 18th to turn in any contest entries.

Coloring Contest

This contest is divided into three age groups. Pick up a sheet from the front desk based on your age group. All you have to do is color it to the best of your ability, print your name, phone number, and age on the back of the picture, and return it to the front desk by November 18th. The age categories are 0 - 7 year-olds; 8 - 13 year-olds; and 14+ year-olds (Yes, you adult Harry Potter fans out there can participate too!). Winners from all categories will be announced at the Harry Potter premiere party on November 19th.

Costume Contest

Anytime before November 18th, come in to the library dressed as your favorite Harry Potter hero, villain, creature, or student. We will take your picture of you in your costume, and nnounce the winner(s) on November 19th. Be sure to leave your name, phone number, and age with whoever takes your picture.

Poster Contest

Design a poster all about Harry Potter. It can be big or small, bright or gloomy. It can be about everything "Potter", or just about your favorite character. Please bring all posters in to the library before November 18th, and include your name, phone number, and age on the back. Winners will be announced on November 19th, and the posters will all be displayed in the library.

Writing Contest

Ever feel that the epilogue in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" just wasn't quite right? Well, here's your chance to show how you think the series should have ended. Rewrite the epilogue in your own words and submit it to the library before November 18th. Please include your name, phone number, and age. Entries may be submitted in handwritten or typed form at the front desk. If you don't have access to a printer, and prefer not to cramp your hand writing, please send your entry to brownlibrarync@gmail.com in copy&paste format only, not as an attachment! (Attachments will not be opened.) Also, make sure your word count is 1500 words or below only.

Harry Potter comes to Brown!

If you hadn't guessed already, Brown Library is going to hosting a month-long (and a bit more) Harry Potter extravaganza. This is all in celebration of Banned Book Week, Teen Read Week, Halloween, and the November arrival of the "beginning of the end", Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

We will be showing all six released Harry Potter movies on every Friday of every week from October 8th to November 12th. On November 19th, we will be having a premiere party, very much like the ones we've hosted for Twilight in the past.

There will also be month-long contests, with winners announced at the premiere party.

Check back at the beginning of next week for a full, offical schedule, and more details on the contests.

Summer Reading Program Extended!

As most of your regrettably found out last week, our building renovations went a little over. We were closed for three days, and that just happened to coincide with the end of the Summer Reading Program. First and foremost, we'd like to thank everyone who came out and joined us Friday for the finale show, Amazing Al! We had a fantastic time, and we're definitely sad to see all the fun events end.

However, since Friday was supposed to be the end of the program, and we were closed, we have decided to extend the Summer Reading Program until Wednesday, August 11th, 2010. Make sure to have all your reading logs turned in by this date, as it's the last day to receive prizes!

We will also be announcing the top readers as soon as the Summer Reading Program is officially over. Also, make sure you come by and sign up for the Water Wonders program we're hosting on August 20th, sponsored by Cornerstones of Science!

"It's Book Time with Ronald McDonald! ®" is an entertaining and inspirational Ronald McDonald show that addresses the topic of reading in a fun and relevant way for elementary school students. Through the use of magic, music, puppets, student participation, and, of course, lots of laughter, Ronald McDonald brings a very powerful message to the children around the world – the value of books and the enjoyment that comes from reading.

The Water Horse, Tuesday, July 27th, 2010, at 1 p.m.!

We're getting close to the end, but it's not over yet! This coming Tuesday, Brown Library will be showing the heart-warming family movie, "The Water Horse" on Tuesday, July 27th, at 1 p.m.

"The story of The Water Horse begins when a young boy named Angus MacMorrow takes home a mysterious object he finds on the beach. He soon realizes that it is a magical egg, and finds himself raising an amazing creature: a mythical "water horse". As he and his friend, whom he names Crusoe, form a bond of friendship, Angus begins a journey of discovery, protecting a secret that gives birth to a legend."

There is no sign up to attend the movie, but we do encourage any kids signed up with the Summer Reading Program to attend! There is limited seating however, so make sure to arrive at least fifteen minutes early. This film is rated PG for some action/peril, mild language and brief smoking.
